The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for providing executive leadership for the staff of The Nurse Practitioner Association of New York State (NPA).  The Executive Director is charged with operationalizing the goals and objectives of The NPA’s Board of Directors in keeping with its mission and vision. The ED is the ‘public face’ of the organization in advocating for The NPA.

Flexible hours. Must be available for regularly scheduled meetings as well as short-notice media events. Must be available to attend on site meetings periodically. Participate and attend the Association’s Capital Day (lobby day), Annual Fall Conference and periodic Regional events.  

The Nurse Practitioner Association New York State (The NPA) was established in 1980 as a non-profit organization under the name The Nurse Practitioner Association, Inc. Since 1980, The NPA has grown financially, programmatically and increased the visibility and credibility of nurse practitioners within the healthcare community, at both the national and state levels of government, and with consumers throughout New York.  The mission of The Nurse Practitioner Association New York State is to promote and support the highest standards of healthcare throughout New York State through education, advocacy, leadership and fostering the empowerment of nurse practitioner professional practice.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Management and Board Relations - The Executive Director is charged with operationalizing the goals and directives of The NPA Board of Directors. The ED represents the board when it is not in session to ensure that board policies and goals are correctly implemented by its committees.
  2. Resource Development - The Executive Director is responsible for proactive and responsible resource development including legislative activities and membership building. The ED conducts weekly meetings with lobby firm while Legislative bodies in session and as needed when out of session. 
  3. Community Relations & Marketing - The Executive Director is responsible for public outreach in support the NPA’s mission, including giving presentations (i.e. NP schools, Region Teaching Days, etc.), managing the social media presence to include placing ads and publishing campaigns. The ED is responsible for providing content for the NPA’s publication The JNPA including writing ED Message and final proof of copy along with providing content for monthly Insights e-mail newsletter. 
  4. Program Management - Oversees all affiliate programs. Support and collaborate with committees and support staff to ensure work is completed. 
  5. Fiscal and Operational Management - The Executive Director is responsible for oversight of financial operations of the budget. The ED recommends a yearly budget for board approval in conjunction with board Treasurer. The ED works in conjunction with CPA and legal counsel as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Nursing or a health-related field
  • Authorized to work in the United States
  • Valid driver’s license with no major violations in the past three years
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Highly proficient with computer software (eg; Word, Excel, Publisher), Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter) and financial software (QuickBooks, payroll processing, online banking).
  • Three years of leadership experience, including human resources functions, financial oversight, and strategic planning
  • Must exhibit exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with others in a clear, professional manner and speak to both large and small groups

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Doctoral degree in Nursing or other healthcare related field.
  • Five years of leadership in a health-related business.
  • Previous experience as a Board member of a Nursing organization or other Healthcare related field.

  • Ability to establish, foster, and maintain effective working relationships with the Board of Directors, The NPA staff, The NPA member’s at large, business partners, academic organizations, state and local governments.

  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, gather and analyze information skillfully, and effectively lead by displaying sound and accurate judgement.
  • Analytical, creative problem solver and thinker.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion with sensitive information.
  • Work well under pressure and with tight deadlines.
