Purpose of Job Description:

Counselors are the primary caregivers for campers.  This position ensures a positive, safe, healthy, enjoyable, and educational experience for each child, teen, alumni, or family member who participates in the Camp Bloomfield residential camp.  Counselor’s plan, teach, coordinate, create and carry-out activities, guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.  Counselors also invent new blind-friendly programming, while motivating campers to use non-visual techniques, adapting all activities so they can participate fully regardless of their level of vision and ability.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Listed below is an outline of the major duties and responsibilities that you will be required to perform.  As staff, you are delegated the authority, responsibility, and accountability to carry out your assigned duties.  Although your job description is broad, every effort has been made to make this outline as complete and detailed as possible.  However, we must emphasize that you may be required to perform other related duties and activities as assigned.

  • Attend the mandatory camp staff meetings before, during and after each session.
  • Wear a clean staff t-shirt while on duty.
  • Adhere to the 11:30 PM “All camp” curfew.
  • Assist campers in cleaning the cabins and organizing their personal belongings daily.
  • Assist in fire drills and all emergency camp procedures.
  • Assist with pick-up and drop-off of campers on arrival and departure day.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of luggage on arrival and departure day.
  • Meet with campers and their parents, especially on arrival and departure days.
  • Meet regularly with Unit Director/Lead Counselor to effectively plan and implement daily activities.
  • Plan, coordinate, lead, and evaluate exciting, impactful, and age-appropriate activities daily.
  • Follow and enforce Camp Policies and safety measures with other staff members and campers in that activity.
  • Assist in developing campers’ objectives with the Unit Director/Lead Camp Counselor to ensure campers’ needs are being met.
  • Complete all written reports in a timely manner.
  • Manage personal time off within the Camp Policy.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff including punctuality, cleanliness, clean up, table manners, closing of camp, etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent camp information to ensure campers’ and staffs’ rights are protected.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis throughout camp.
  • Attend all meetings scheduled by the Camp Director or your supervisor.
  • Assist in all other activity and living areas as needed by the Unit Director/Lead Camp Counselor.
  • Communicate with the daily with the Unit Director/Lead Camp Counselor.

  • Support a group of campers in a cabin along with other counselors.
  • Sit with and interact with your assigned cabin during meals.
  • Ensure that all camper awards are creative, fun, appropriate and completed by the end of rest hour on Awards dinner night.
  • Other duties as assigned. 


  • Participate, conduct, and complete all requirements for the outcome’s component of Camp Bloomfield for each camper as instructed by the Unit Director/Lead Camp Counselor.
  • Provide for the safety and well being of campers within your cabin group during the entire camp session.
  • Supervise all aspects of the camper’s day including morning wake up, cabin clean up, mealtimes, rest hour, evening activities, daily activities, bedtimes, and after hour duties as assigned.
  • Ensure all campers leave camp with all their personal belongings.
  • Ensure that campers maintain a high level of personal hygiene daily.
  • Instruct cabin group in emergency procedures such as fire drills, earthquakes, emergency evacuation of camp, or any other type of emergency.
  • Assist cabin group in planning participation in “all camp” events such as carnivals, dances, campfires, etc.
  • Assist in teaching an activity as assigned by Unit Director/Lead Camp Counselor.
  • Carry out established roles for supervising camper health, diet, medications, hygiene, etc.
  • Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety at all times.
  • Follow and implement the camp goals, policies, and schedules at all times.
  • Maintain cleanliness of self, cabin facilities, and camp equipment at all times.
  • Carry out all camp programs as assigned.
  • Assist with the after-hours programming as assigned (i.e., twilight, campfire, special events, etc.).
  • Communicate daily with the Core Staff.
  • Communicate emergencies such as a sick or hurt camper immediately to the Nurse and the Unit Director/Lead Camp Counselor.

  • Ability to lead small and large groups in camp and cabin activities.
  • Desire to work with children, teens, and adults who are blind, visually impaired, and multi-disabled.
  • Ability to organize daily activities.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and cooperative.
  • Knowledge of group dynamics.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to secure CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Meet all health screening, drug testing and background investigation clearances
  • Must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 (exemptions or accommodations will be considered for medical reasons or religious belief/practice). Will consider candidates who can present evidence of completion of a one-dose vaccine regimen or first dose of a two-dose vaccine and proof of appointment for second-dose vaccine regime on or before employment start date.
  • Ability to relate positively to one’s peer group.
  • Have a sense of humor, patience, self-control, and good judgment.
  • Must be physically capable of handling the rigorous schedule of a resident camp environment.
  • Must possess a cheerful disposition, enthusiasm, and be outgoing.
  • Must be able to cope with the emotional and mental stress of the position.
  • Must be able to function independently, have personal integrity, and the ability to work. effectively with coworkers, participants, and support agencies.
  • Must be able to physically move many times throughout the day.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability and maturity.
  • Must be able to lift to 30 pounds.
