 Hueman Executive Search, on behalf of its internationally recognized Higher Education client is looking to hire a Executive Director, Research and Grants Administration; Biological Sciences. This position acts as a consultant and subject matter expert working with executive leadership on developing organizational capabilities for grants administration aimed at improving the division wide research enterprise.

Reporting to the Assistant/Associate Dean of Finance, the incumbent will utilize knowledge and expertise in research administration and provide divisional leadership to enable department or unit leaders to meet organizational needs, align goals, and accomplish strategic targets. The leader in this role will provide data-driven strategic recommendations to the leadership on how to plan and grow a portfolio of high-quality research. 

Established in 1930, the BSD is comprised of faculty, staff, and administrative leaders across clinical and basic science units. In this unique academic community, the largest academic unit of the University, the BSD delivers undergraduate, graduate, medical, and postgraduate education in the biological sciences as well as providing outstanding patient care and world-renowned research in the life sciences. The BSD team includes 135 faculty within the 10 basic science departments, over 800 faculty across 13 clinical departments, and 2400 staff members supporting faculty and researchers across the BSD departments and School of Medicine.  Our faculty researchers and faculty physicians work in collaboration with the University Medical Center to provide world renown patient care and to address the world’s most pressing medical challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide divisional oversight and continuous improvement of research grants management and administration.
  • Provides support to faculty for continued growth of research activities and to the success of research funding.
  • Represent BSD to the University, URA, and other units/offices in the research administration and compliance.
  • Establish procedures for auditing and financial record management systems to monitor the financial integrity of the grants, ensuring that all contractual agreements and budget commitments are met.
  • Ensures the highest level of integrity in the conduct of research, including compliance with relevant regulations, serving as a divisional leadership and resource to the BSD and URA.
  • In partnership with Executive Administrators, provide consultation and training to grant administration staff ensuring successful research funding and budget management for new and continuing grant accounts including re-budgeting and other budget adjustments, budget-to-actual analysis, and interpretations of regulations.
  • Establish and manage divisional tools for grant activity monitoring, reporting, strategic planning, and forecasting.
  • Work in partnership with Executive Administrators and across BSD units ensuring compliance of University research and programs with all relevant regulations; review and advocate for resources to facilitate operations of these units.
  • Manage the relationships with all stakeholders to ensure excellence in service.
  • Provide leadership in staff development and continuing education.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 10+ years of work experience in an academic research environment.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Experience within a large and complex academic institute.
  • Experience with large scale process improvement.
  • Experience influencing academic and administrative leadership toward continuous process improvement.
  • CRA, CIA or CPA preferred
